Drugs sedate the mind of the person and keep them in a semi-conscious state for some time. Once the effect of the drug is over, the person will come back to his senses and as time goes by he will seek to get back into this ‘altered’ state again. This makes the person addicted to drug. Drug addiction rips the person completely out of his identity and with time it will devastate him.  Such an individual has to undergo an effective drug addiction treatment as soon as possible to avoid serious issues.

In drug addiction, patients are being pulled in two different directions. One direction is the pro-addiction that is continuing the habit of addiction therefore the mind will find ways to get the substance and works in the pleasure seeking zone. The mind will do everything so that it can put the substance in the body to make the blood level stay more or less constant. When the blood level decreases, the mind goes into an alarm emergency phase and starts to do everything to bring the blood level of substance x back to the pleasurable levels. Henceforth, this is called the pro addiction phase.

The other direction is the pro-recovery phase. It is when the person starts doing the good actions to make him get well and goes away from the substance abuse and starts taking control of his mind and his habits, his choices. What we do in Sanctuary Mauritius is basically to take a person who is going in a wrong direction of pro addiction and bring him to the road of pro-recovery. In this sense, we give him necessary tools to make his mind understand the triggers that has been pulling him towards drug addiction and to control and learn habits that will take him away from the hell of addiction.

It is about retraining the mind. I like the word re-engineering the mind for this is exactly what we do so that we can change the life of a person.
